Personal growth requires one to recognize — “You’re the sum of your inputs”.

If you take a nice, good look at your life. Yes, exactly how long you watch others’ lives go by on Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat or Twitter, you’d realize why you’re dissatisfied. As we watch the lives of our friends, colleagues and acquaintances unfold on social media, there is an almost instinctive and urgent desire to compare our progress with others. But this blog, isn’t about that. This is about the adverse effects of a personal growth mindset. Hilarious, isn’t it? That’s one thing that wasn’t supposed to have adverse effects. Like, seriously, why doesn’t life come with a manual I can read and ace? Anyways, so I have been absorbing A LOT of self growth and development wisdom over the past year and turns out I cannot mindlessly enjoy movies anymore.

So last weekend, when I sat down with my mom to watch a Bollywood movie Dasvi, I saw myself ridiculously making mental notes about the life lessons the movie teaches us. Since I have successfully managed to kill my brain-dead time, I decided to share my observations with you.

01 You can only play your best game using the cards you are dealt with. Blaming others, wallowing in your grief or burdening yourself with expectations of others only causes pain.

02 You cannot control anyone. Even when you think you can. People will continue to act in a way that serves them best. You can only control how you act.

03 Even the worst of circumstances and the gloomiest places have something to teach only if you are curious and willing to learn.

04 Never give anyone your power willingly. Never let go of your beliefs and value system even when everything is crumbling and the odds are stacked against you.

05 The more time you waste being disappointed about how things didn't work out as planned, the lesser time you have to act.

06 The older you get, your body plays against you. Work to stay fit.

07 You are never too old to go back to school. Think your skill-set is getting rusty? It’s never late to start learning.

08 Power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely.

09 You can always decide to choose better. To be the bigger person. To let old disagreements slide. It’s never too late to do good.

10 Don’t burn bridges. You never know when power tips the scales.

11 Education is a window to the world.

Having shared my unsolicited wisdom far and wide, the movie could have seriously done better. It labours with theatrics, songs and stale writing to briskly touch upon so many topics like freedom struggle of India, corruption in Indian politics and inter-caste marriages. Despite having actors like Nimrat Singh (who outdid herself to exceed expectations) and Abhishek Bachchan (who nailed the brief), Dasvi falls short of making an impact.

But don’t just take my word for it, go see it for yourself. Clearly I was simply making notes on personal development.

adios
